At Vets4Pets, we have a wealth of knowledge and experience among our vets. This allows individual vets to gain expertise and skills by concentrating their study in a specific area.

Other vets within the practice can then refer cases in these areas to the vets with increased knowledge, allowing all of our clients (and patients) to benefit from the breadth of expertise available.

If your pet has been diagnosed with a form of cancer, you will be referred to the Vets4Pets vet with a particular interest in cancer medicine (oncology), Dr Brendan Maguire.

Dr Maguire works at our Mawson Lakes Vets4Pets hospital, where we have trained staff and special facilities for administration of chemotherapy to patients who need this.

If you are referred internally by a Vets4Pets veterinarian, they will discuss your pet’s case with Dr Maguire before you have an initial oncology consultation with him, so that he is up to speed with your pet’s individual problem. At the oncology consultation, Dr Maguire will discuss with you the next steps available, such as further diagnostic or treatment options for your pet’s particular cancer, or palliative care if this is appropriate. Any such options will be fully explained to ensure you are able to make an informed decision about your pet’s care. This initial consultation will last around 40 minutes, and will therefore cost more than a standard consult fee (ask at reception for details on cost).

Dr Maguire will then talk to the referring vet again about your pet, so that they are aware of what is happening too. This ensures a consistent approach to your pet by all vets involved in their treatment.

Treatment options

If chemotherapy is recommended, this will be undertaken at the Mawson Lakes Vets4Pets hospital. Other treatments or diagnostics may be referred back to the initial vet, carried out by Dr Maguire at Mawson Lakes or, if complex surgery is required, referred to one of our advanced surgeons within the practice.

The aim is always to provide the best of care to your pet.

If you have any specific questions about your pet’s care, please do not hesitate to ask any of our staff.
